UE 5.8 shipped in June as the final planned major UE5 release before Unreal Engine 6. The production-ready list is the part to plan around; the experimental list is the part to keep off your shipping branch.
Epic released Unreal Engine 5.8 in June 2026 as the last planned major UE5 release before Unreal Engine 6. UE5 keeps getting bug and regression support, and a 5.9 is possible, but 5.8 is the stable target to finish a project on.
Epic labels each big system production-ready or experimental. Production-ready (MegaLights, Movie Render Graph, Live Link Hub, Dataflow, Chaos Cloth) is safe to build pipelines on. Experimental (Mesh Terrain, MCP, MetaHuman Collections, Toon Shader) belongs in a sandbox, not on a shipping branch.
The 5% royalty above $1 million lifetime gross carries into UE6 unchanged.
On 5.4–5.6, plan one last upgrade to 5.8. On 5.7, budget the move against your next content milestone. Starting fresh, build on 5.8 and keep experimental systems flagged off.
